After Lucie and Dr. Manette reunite in Paris, they travel back to London to begin a new life. This is where Lucie meets and falls in love with Charles Darnay, a wealthy Frenchman who nevertheless takes a progressive stance against the poor treatment of the lower classes.
With the Reign of Terror on the horizon, no one is safe, and fear and suspicion abound. However, Dickens himself is at his best and brightest throughout A Tale of Two Cities ; the ending in particular will make your head spin no pun intended, for those who know what happens. This one is a proper bildungsroman, following the character of Pip, an orphan who aspires to become a gentleman. In his youth, Pip regularly visits Miss Havisham, a bitter old spinster who was left at the altar.
Miss Havisham has an adopted daughter, Estella, whom she teaches to hate men. Naturally, Pip falls head-over-heels in love with her. Determined to prove himself, Pip begins a career in blacksmithing and lives in London with the financial help of a mysterious benefactor — but is heartbroken when Estella falls in love with or rather, strategically decides to marry somebody else. Masterfully constructed and beautifully composed, this epic novel of love, loss, and of course social class completely deserves its eternal place on English class reading lists everywhere.
The whole story ignites with a shocking discovery: the heir to a significant fortune Dickens sure loved this plot device , John Harmon, is found dead and bloated in the River Thames. Parallel to this plotline runs the dilemma of Lizzie Hexam, the daughter of the man who pulled Harmon out of the water, and who must grapple with some not-so-suitable suitors of her own. The final chapter of an illustrious career ends on a massive question mark.
The title character is an orphan-done-good who is betrothed to fellow orphan, Rosa Bud. At the time of his death, Dickens left no notes on how the story was to proceed he was a pantser, as they say which has led to much academic speculation — and even a few attempts to finish the book. Oliver Twist Nicholas Nickleby Little Nell Trent lives in the quiet gloom of the old curiosity shop with her ailing grandfather, for whom she cares with selfless devotion. But when they are unable to pay their debts to the stunted, lecherous and demonic money-lender Daniel Quilp, the shop is seized and they are forced to flee, thrown into a shadowy world in which there seems to be no safe haven.
Dickens's portrayal of the innocent, tragic Nell made The Old Curiosity Shop an instant bestseller that captured the hearts of the nation, even as it was criticised for its sentimentality by figures such as Oscar Wilde. Yet alongside the story's pathos are some of Dickens's greatest comic and grotesque creations: the ne'er-do-well Dick Swiveller, the mannish lawyer Sally Brass, the half-starved 'Marchioness' and the lustful, loathsome Quilp himself.
This edition, based on the original text of , contains an introduction by Norman Page discussing the various contrasting themes of the novel and its roots in Dickens's own personal tragedy, with prefaces to the and editions, a chronology, notes and original illustrations produced for the serial version.
