The blessing is for both the bride and the groom, but primarily for the bride. It is only given during the wedding Mass, and only given once in a lifetime. The Nuptial Blessing can be read, or chanted. Mercifully give ear, O Lord, to our prayers, and let thy grace accompany this thy institution, by which thou hast ordained the propagation of mankind, that this tie, which is made by thy authority, may be preserved by thy grace.
O God, who, by the power of thy might, didst create all things out of nothing: who, at the first forming of the world, having made man to the likeness of God, didst, out of his flesh, make the woman, and give her to him for a help-mate: and by this didst inform us, that what in its beginning was one, ought never to be separated.
O God, who by so excellent a mystery, hast consecrated this union of the two sexes, and hast been pleased to make it a type of the great sacrament of Christ and his Church, O God, by whom woman is joined to man, and that union, which was instituted in the beginning, is still accompanied with such a blessing, as alone, neither in punishment of original sin, nor by the sentence of the deluge, had been recalled; mercifully look down upon this thy handmaid, who, being now to be joined in wedlock, earnestly desires to be taken under thy protection: may love and peace constantly remain in her: may she marry in Christ faithful and chaste: may she ever imitate the holy women of former times: may she be pleasing to her husband, like Rachael: discreet, like Rebecca; may she, in her years and fidelity, be like Sarah: and may the first author of all evil, at no time, have any share in her actions.
May she remain attached to the faith and the commandments, and, being joined to one man in wedlock, may she fly all unlawful addresses: may a regularity of life and conduct be her strength against the weakness of her sex: may she be modest and grave, bashful and venerable, and well instructed in heavenly doctrine. According to local customs, the rite of blessing and imposition of the lazo wedding garland or of the veil may take place before the Nuptial Blessing. The spouses remain kneeling in their place. If the lazo has not be placed earlier, and it is now convenient to do so, it may be placed at this time, or else, a veil is placed over the head of the wife and the shoulders of the husband, thus symbolizing the bond that unites them.
The Priest or one who presides says: Bless, O Lord, this lazo or this veil , A symbol of the indissoluble union that Name and Name have established from this day forward before you and with your help.
The lazo or the veil is held by two family members or friends and is placed over the shoulders of the newly married couple. After the Our Father, the prayer Deliver us is omitted. The Priest, standing and facing the bride and bridegroom, invokes upon them God's blessing, and this is never omitted.
In the invitation, if one or both of the spouses will not be receiving Communion, the words in parentheses are omitted. In the last paragraph of the prayer, the words in parentheses may be omitted if it seems that circumstances suggest it, for example, if the bride and bridegroom are advanced in years.
The bride and bridegroom approach the altar or, if appropriate, they remain at their place and kneel. The Priest, with hands joined, calls upon those present to pray:. Dear brothers and sisters, let us humbly pray to the Lord that on these his servants, now married in Christ, he may mercifully pour out the blessing of his grace and make of one heart in love by the Sacrament of Christ's Body and Blood those he has joined by a holy covenant. Let us pray to the Lord for this bride and groom, who come to the altar as they begin their married life, that partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ they may always be bound together by love for one another.
Then the Priest or minister , with hands extended over the bride and bridegroom, continues to say or sing:. Prayer Of St. Thomas Aquinas Grant me, O Lord my God,a mind to know you,a heart to seek you, wisdom to find you, conduct pleasing to you, faithful perseverance in waiting for you,and a hope of finally embracing you.
