A functioning PlayStation Network is required for online multiplayer and the ability to download games and updates, so there are many gamers stuck in limbo at the moment. Sony isn't the only company to suffer these outages, as Microsoft and Nintendo have their fair shares of issues with their online services.
It's common for servers to go down when popular games are released, or on the launch day of a new console or online system, when it cannot handle the massive influx of new players that are registering and logging on during a short period of time.
It's likely that the PSN outage won't last for very long.
